Nationality, Citizenship and Legal Status

Many people are apparently unaware that nationality and citizenship form the basis of their own legal status. 

Most people are unfamiliar with the political status of sovereign states under international law, and through national legal systems.

How do you prove your identity if not with identity documents?

How do you prove the legal status of your family/social relationships, particularly with a marital or otherwise civil partner, or children, or step-children, or parents, siblings or in-laws?
